Martha's Case: The Unwelcome Phone Call

Correct! The answer is 4: All of the above.

Because Martha is asymptomatic but most at risk, she should be screened for:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • HIV (with pre and post-test counselling)
  • Syphilis

Martha does not have any visible genital lesions. If she did, testing for HSV would also be necessary.

The usefulness of HPV testing for STI prevention has never been shown and is therefore not currently recommended. However, research involving HPV is continuing and may lead to future changes in testing recommendations.

HIV testing with pre and post-test should be carried out but only with Martha's informed consent.
