Canadian SARS Numbers

August 25, 2003

Canada: As of August 25, 2003 there are a total of 438 cases; 251 probable (1 active) and 187 suspect (0 active) in Canada. Due to the power failure in Ontario, SARS numbers for August 15 to August 24, 2003 are not available. See tables 1 and 2 for today's breakdown of case status by affected province/territory and tables 3 and 4 for numbers reported over the previous ten days. There have been no changes since the last report. Further information about SARS cases in Ontario can be found on the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care website: <http://www.health.gov.on.ca/english/public/updates/

The most recent date of onset of illness for a probable case is June 12, 2003; this case was quarantined on June 4, 2003. The most recent date of isolation for a probable case is June 12, 2003; this case had onset of illness on June 8, 2003.

Since more than four incubation periods have elapsed since the last reported probable case of SARS in Canada, an epidemiologic curve of the Canadian outbreak (Feb 2003 to July 2003) was posted on August 8, 2003 PDF. This curve begins with the first reported case on February 23 and ends on July 2 two full incubation periods after the last reported case.

International: As of July 14, 2003, the WHO is no longer publishing daily cumulative numbers of reported probable SARS cases. Review of cases is ongoing and, in some countries/areas, the final outcome of probable cases is still unfolding. WHO continues to consolidate global surveillance data for the outbreak period, from November 1, 2002 to July 5, 2003 and will publish these findings on their website.
