General Profile of Sports and Recreation Activity Injuries

HIGHLIGHTS

During the period 1990-1992, injuries acquired during sports and recreational activity were the cause of 6% of deaths and 17% of hospitalizations related to injury among Canadians under the age of 20. The highest death rate for these injuries was among 15-19-year-olds, and the highest hospitalization rate was among 10-14-year-olds.

The death rate for injuries due to sports and recreational activity fell by 40% between 1982 and 1992; the hospitalization rate fell by 20% between 1985 and 1992.
