General Profile of Injuries Related to Motor Vehicles and Other Road Vehicles

HIGHLIGHTS

During the period 1990-1992, injuries related to motor vehicles and other road vehicles were the leading cause of death due to injury among children and youth over the age of 1 and the leading cause of hospitalization for injury among 15-19-year-olds. Death and hospitalization rates increased with age, reaching especially high levels among 15-19-year-olds. Boys in all age groups had higher rates than girls.

The death rate for injuries related to motor vehicles and other road vehicles peaked in the early 1970s and then dropped by more than 60% between 1973 and 1992. The hospitalization rate dropped by about 25% between 1988 and 1992.
