Figure 1: Age distribution of confirmed measles cases by exposure source, Canada, December 30, 2013, to May 10, 2014 (n = 103)

The percent distribution of confirmed measles cases by source of exposure and age group, in 2014, is presented in figure 1. The age distribution varied by exposure source. Cases among infants less than 12 months and children between the ages of 1 to 4 years were more often exposed to measles outside of Canada via importation, or in Canada, through exposure to an imported case (28.6% and 29.1%, respectively). Conversely, 96.3% of cases with an unknown source of exposure, and 100% of cases linked to a case with unknown source of exposure, were aged 5 years or older. There were 20 cases for which the source of exposure was pending investigation. For this group of cases, 10% were less than 12 months old, 20% were between 1 and 4 years, 35% were between 5 and 19 years, and 35% were older than 20 years of age.
