Effective surveillance necessarily depends on broad collaboration among the many people who identify, treat and combat threats to public health—doctors, nurses, officers of health and administrators. The ability to share accurate, current information rapidly and effectively is central to this collaboration.
Not all jurisdictions in Canada collect and store the same information about public health. To facilitate consistent and transparent sharing of relevant, comparable information, PHAC works closely with the Pan-Canadian Public Health Network's National Surveillance Information Task Group to develop a multi-lateral information sharing agreement (MLISA). The agreement defines why, how, what and when information and biological substances can be shared among various health authorities in Canada.
