2.3 Analyses

The analyses were conducted using a content-concept analysis approach, with the Analytical Framework employed as the analysis template. Information from each data source (interview, process document or output document) relevant to each of the concepts on the template was noted, and the information aggregated for each case. The analysis of this material focussed on identifying how population health concepts were translated in the accounts of actions undertaken in the initiatives, starting from the understanding of population health used in that setting. The results for each case are presented in the following six chapters by means of a narrative description that aims to capture the main features of the initiative from the perspectives of the principal actors, along with information on each of the components of the Analytical Framework. Readers are invited to refer to the Framework in Appendix 1 for detailed lists of the questions that guided the analyses. In the narrative text of each case study, reference to specific questions in the Framework is made in bold characters. Verbatim citations from interview respondents are indicated in italics.

The cross-case analysis, reported in the final section, aims to identify learnings that emerged from the entire set of cases, in order to be able to report on:

  • how to mobilize people/communities/institutions/governments around the determinants of health

  • how to develop effective intersectoral partnerships

  • learnings about key determinants of health

  • how to collaborate across regions to extract best practices, learn from mistakes and complement one another's work.

The concluding section of the report is a critical assessment of the ways in which the regional mobilization strategy has helped turn the theory into practice and has produced practice-derived knowledge that can in turn advance theoretical understanding of population health mobilization.
