The initiative examined in the case study of regional mobilization of population health for the British Columbia/Yukon Region is the Vancouver Agreement for the Downtown Eastside (DTES). This area of Vancouver includes historically and culturally important zones such as Gastown and Chinatown, as well as a mix of commercial and residential areas, with a large concentration of single-room occupancy hotels. This initiative addresses the panoply of social, economic and health problems, which led to the declaration of a major public health crisis in the DTES in the late 1990s.
