Surveillance results 1999-2005

  • From October 1998 to 2005
    • 3039 new cases of VRE were identified
  • Infection rate = 6.3% (n=189)
  • Rates increased over 7 years of surveillance from:
    • 0.37 to 1.32 / 1,000 patient admissions
    • 5.34 to 15.5 / 100,000 patient days
    • 1.1 to 3.1 / 100 enterococcal isolates*
      *based on 8 CNISP sites

Conclusions

  • Over 7 years of surveillance, the rate rose due primarily to colonizations
  • Compared to 2004 NNIS rates in the US of 12%, rates in Canada of 3.3% remain significantly lower.
  • 1/3 of the cases have occurred in 2005
  • Infection rates have remained stable (6.3%)
  • While in the past rates were increasing in the West, more recent data show that rates are increasing in all regions of Canada.
