Figure 9 : Reported incidence rate1 of acute HBV infection by year and ethnic group, EHSSS, 1999-20082

Between January 1999 and September 2008, among cases with known information on ethnicity, cumulatively reported incidence rate of acute HBV infection per 100,000 inhabitants was 1.92 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.46-2.53) for Aboriginal peoples and 0.78 (95% CI 0.72-0.85) in non-Aboriginal peoples. Poisson regression analysis revealed that Aboriginal Canadians were more likely than non-Aboriginal Canadians to develop acute hepatitis B (adjusted rate ratio 3.32, 95% CI 2.39-4.61).

The rate of incidence of acute hepatitis B per 100,000 population was:
Year Aboriginals Non Aboriginals
1999-2000 5.21 1.36
2001-2002 3.08 0.97
2003-2004 1.21 0.83
2005-2006 1.30 0.63
2007-2008 0.92 0.44
