Overview
Welcome to our online consultation to support the development
of national public health goals for Canada. Thank you for
taking the time to visit our Web site. We would be delighted
to have you share your ideas and views with us.
Who?
The federal, provincial and territorial governments have
embarked on a national consultation process with public
health experts and Canadians to define national public health
goals that will be supported in all areas of Canada. This
initiative follows an agreement among Canada’s First
Ministers on the need to better co-ordinate inter-governmental
efforts to improve the health and safety of our citizens.
What?
We are working toward the creation of common, pan-Canadian
public health goals that will enable all jurisdictions of
Canada to establish public health targets that reflect their
respective needs and priorities.
Why?
We want Canadians to be the healthiest people in the world.
With a set of common, pan-Canadian public health goals,
and jurisdiction-specific targets that support those goals,
we hope to ensure that all Canadians enjoy the best possible
health, no matter where they live in the country.
How?
Building upon previous efforts taken in Canada and in
other countries, we have developed a comprehensive Consultation
Plan that shares the learning of others and seeks the
ideas, thoughts and opinions of Canadian public health experts,
interested stakeholders and members of the public. We will
ensure the goals we ultimately agree upon will be widely
supported and embraced by engaging citizens through the
use of tools such as:
Our Consultation Plan includes
a series of events planned to ensure expert and citizen
involvement in the creation of the common public health
goals:
- Roundtable meetings to review the goals process with
experts, stakeholders and concerned citizens in every
province and territory
- Events with experts on six major public health themes
- Citizen Dialogue workshops with members of the general
public
- On-line consultations with youth
- Meetings held by stakeholder groups and elected officials
in all areas of the country
- Reports from each consultation event will be posted
to this Web site to ensure openness and the widest possible
exchange of ideas. To read the reports we have posted
so far, click on What We Are Hearing.
When?
The consultations began March 29, 2005 and are scheduled
to continue through until Fall 2005. Over the summer, we
will begin to review and synthesize the input we receive.
A national conference will be organized in the Fall to affirm
directions and determine our next steps.
Where?
Meetings and forums have been scheduled to take place
in all provinces and territories of the country, to ensure
the goals truly reflect the input of all Canadians. For
a look at our schedule of events, click on our Calendar
of Consultation Events. For those who cannot participate
directly in the events, Our Consultation
Materials and the e-survey are available on this Web site.
