Organization Description

The sponsoring organization, the Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada (VON Canada) is a national, charitable health care organization that has been caring for Canadians in their homes and local communities since 1897. VON Canada has pioneered the development of community-based health and related support services and, as one of Canada's first national health care organizations, it has served an important role in the evolution of Canada's health care system.

Project Title and Description

Parenting Guidelines for Families of Children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAS/FAE)
This was a four year national project to develop best practice guidelines around parenting approaches for families caring for children affected by FAS/FAE (now Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). The project built on the personal experiences of parents and front-line care providers (including foster and adoptive families) as well as existing research and resources in developing the best practice tool for those caring for children with FASD. The guidelines are intended to be practical, user-friendly approaches that parents and care givers may use to promote the healthy development of these children.

Organization Description

The sponsoring organization, the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) is an arms-length, national agency, established in 1988 by an Act of Parliament, funded by Canada's Drug Strategy and through its own revenue-generating efforts. The CCSA holds some 1200 documents on the topic of fetal alcohol syndrome and substance abuse during pregnancy.

Project Title and Description

National database of FASD and Substance Use During Pregnancy Resources
The purpose of this project is to create and maintain, on the CCSA website a National Database of FASD and substance use during pregnancy resources. The database provides a central access to the many resources that are available in Canada for work in prevention, education, identification and intervention.

Organization Description

Incorporated in 1998, the sponsoring organization, SAFERA is a non-governmental unilingual french organization based in Quebec that provides FAS support and resource material to Francophone Canadians living in and outside of Quebec. It's mission is the training and support for persons living with and affected by FAS/FAE and to increase the awareness and information available to Francophone Canadians.

Project Title and Description

La Boîte à Outils (Prévention du SAF)
This project partnered with francophone Canada Prenatal Nutrition Programs, Aboriginal Head Start and Community Action Programs both in Quebec and outside of the province to design an interactive internet site, a Francophone video for parents and care givers, a collection of accessible resources and information. SAFERA also hosted a first ever international Francophone FASD conference. It was held in Quebec City, in December 2005 and attracted more than 200 persons from Quebec, other parts of Canada, the US and France.

Organization Description

Breaking the Cycle, is a program of Mothercraft, the sponsoring organization, and is a community-based early identification and prevention and intervention program designed to reduce the risk and enhance the development of substance-exposed children by addressing maternal addiction issues and the mother-child relationship through an integrated, cross-sectoral model.

Nurturing Change: Working effectively with high-risk women and affected children to prevent and reduce harms associated with FASD or, the official project title listing:
Promoting Effective FAS-related Practices in CAPC/CPNP Projects Through Targeted Knowledge and Skills Transfer

This project developed and delivered eight two-day “Live” interactive training sessions to front-line workers focussed on knowledge and skills to screen and support women at risk and affected children within the context of CAPC/CPNP projects. The training manual entitled Nurturing Change: Working effectively with high-risk women and affected children to prevent and reduce harms associated with FASD was developed along with a web-based tool kit.

Organization Description

The sponsoring organization, the Canadian Institute of Child Health (CICH) is a national, charitable organization founded in 1977 to promote the health and well-being of all children and youth in Canada, and has a successful history of developing and implementing initiatives to increase public understanding and awareness of child health issues. CICH is a well recognized advocate for children.

Project Title and Description

FAS/Eout: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum/Effects Outreach Project
FASEout: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum/Effects Outreach Project was a four-year project, designed to take current evidence on Best Practices relating to FASD off the bookshelves and into use across Canada. Through collaboration between national non-governmental organizations and grassroots agencies, the project compared the policies and practices of these organizations and agencies to sets of recommended Best Practices.

Fourteen community organizations participated as pilot sites and in total 1,370 professionals, parents and community members attended the pilot training events. The dissemination of current research and information on alcohol use and pregnancy was presented at workshops and conferences and reached an estimated 2,225 participants. A bilingual website providing power point presentations, a national database of trainers, and a forum for trainers to share up-to-date information and resources is available at www.faseout.ca

Organization Description

The sponsoring organization, the National Indian and Inuit Community Health Representatives Organization (NIICHRO) is a non-governmental organization incorporated in 1992 to assist Community Health Representatives (CHRs) in improving the health status of Indian and Inuit people.

Project Title and Description

National Indian and Inuit Community Health Representatives Organization FAS/FAE National Training Session
This project developed a “Train-the-Trainer” model to deliver FAS/FAE skills training in both official languages to approximately 275 Community Health Representatives (CHRs) and other front-line workers. The training built on a previously developed manual “It Takes a Community” developed by the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada. Components of the project produced a 48 page “In Touch” magazine on FAS/FAE in Aboriginal communities. A training curriculum was also developed and produced as a training kit.

Organization Description

The mission of the sponsoring organization, Red River College (RRC), is to provide high-quality educational and training opportunities that support economic, cultural and social development in Manitoba. The RRC currently delivers 110 full-time diploma and certificate programs. The college maintains a strong commitment to life-long learning by operating a comprehensive Continuing Education office, as well as a network of four regional campuses to accommodate rural learners.

Project Title and Description

Applied Studies in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effects
This project developed a 16 courses outlines for the Applied Studies in Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Effects Certificate Program as stand-alone modules that can be offered through a joint certificate program with other colleges across Canada. Students would be registered at both colleges and would receive a joint certificate containing the logo of both colleges. Red River College would offer instructor training on campus on request, at the expense of the interested college. As a result, several other colleges have adapted this certificate program and several students have graduated with this certificate. The program consists of 431 hours of theory and 120 hours of practicum

Organization Description

The sponsoring organization Prostitutes Empowerment, Education & Resource Society (PEERS) is a non-profit society established in 1995 by ex-prostitutes and community supporters. PEERS respects and assists individuals who want to improve their safety and working conditions, want to leave the sex industry, and strives to increase public understanding. Some pregnant sex trade workers, particularly youth do not have the knowledge about the severe impact alcohol has on the fetus.

Project Title and Description

National Networking Project
This project developed a national FASD information and resource network with agencies that work with sex trade workers and with health experts across Canada. It increased the front-line workers' capacity by developing workshops which included training in harm reduction, practical day-to-day tools and ways to identify high-risk clients. It also developed appropriate resource materials that will reach those closest to the street using plain language, developed by former sex trade workers, for sex trade workers with expertise provided by health experts.
