Stroke Rehabilitation

What is Stroke Rehabilitation?

After a stroke, you may have to learn different ways to think, speak and move. Stroke rehabilitation (rehab) is a learning process where the rehabilitation team will work closely with you and your caregiver(s). Together you will set goals, make a plan and take part in treatment that will give you the strength and confidence to live as independently as possible.

When and where does rehabilitation begin?

Rehab begins when your doctor feels you are medically stable and can benefit the most from it. Rehab services are offered in different places and settings. Where you might go will depend on what is offered in your local area and the type of rehab program that best suits your recovery needs. Rehab services provided in different places can include:

  • In-patient programs in acute care hospitals, rehab hospitals or long-term care facilities
  • Out-patient programs in different types of facilities
  • At home, with the help of home health agencies.

Usually you need a medical referral to access rehab services. If you don't get a referral and feel you need one, don't be afraid to ask your doctor.

Who is the Stroke Team?

A rehab program involves many different types of health professionals who make up the stroke team. These may include:

  • doctors
  • nurses
  • physiotherapists
  • occupational therapists
  • therapeutic recreation specialists
  • speech therapists
  • social workers
  • psychologists
  • dieticians

What Will I Do in Rehabilitation?

What you do in rehab depends on what you need to become independent. You may need to work on things like:

  • self-care skills like feeding, dressing and bathing
  • moving skills like walking or self-propelling a wheelchair
  • communication skills to help you speak
  • thinking skills to improve your memory or problem-solving abilities
  • social skills to help you interact with others.

How Long Will I Be in Rehabilitation?

No one can say how long a rehab program should last, since each program is tailored to meet an individual's recovery needs. A program can also change if your condition improves.
