I've Had a Heart Attack. Is it Safe for Me to Have Sex Again?

Heart attack survivors often worry about sexual activity after a heart attack. Their fear is that having sex may cause another heart attack. In reality, this rarely happens.

If you've had a heart attack, here are some guidelines you can follow before resuming sexual activity:

  • obtain clearance from your doctor
  • seek medical advice if you have questions
  • avoid excessive physical demands
  • prevent stressful situations
  • take all medications correctly
  • avoid sexual activity for at least two to three hours after drinking alcohol or eating.

Alert!

Stop sexual activity immediately and call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • chest pain
  • very quick heart rate
  • severe shortness of breath.

Some medications for angina, high blood pressure and other types of heart disease can affect sexual function. Talk to your doctor if this is happening to you. Other drugs may be available that you can use instead.

Having a heart attack is a traumatic experience. However, with time, patience and a sympathetic partner, there is no reason that a person with a heart condition can't enjoy a fulfilling sexual relationship.
