Description

The Community Action Committee for Southwestern Newfoundland Inc. has established Healthy Baby Clubs to serve communities on the Port au Port Peninsula, in the Bay St. George South region, and in communities on the southwestern portion of the Island. These Healthy Baby Clubs offer prenatal and postnatal support services including nutritional assessment, food supplements, home visits, group activities, breastfeeding support and healthy lifestyle/prenatal education using a peer-support team approach.

With support from CPNP, the Exploits Valley Community Coalition Inc. operates a Healthy Baby Club in central Newfoundland and Labrador. Using a peer support team approach, the Club provides comprehensive prenatal and postnatal support to priority pregnant women. Services include nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, breastfeeding promotion and support, and healthy lifestyle education out of four family resource centres in Grand Falls-Windsor, Peterview, and Botwood, and at six outreach sites in the area.

With support from CPNP, the Gander Bay Community Action Program for Children Inc. operates a Healthy Baby Club on the east side of Notre Dame Bay. Using a peer support team approach, the Club provides comprehensive prenatal and postnatal support to priority pregnant women. Services include nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, breastfeeding promotion and support, and healthy lifestyle education. Programs are offered from six locations in the Gander Bay area: Wing's Point, Horwood, Stoneville, Rodger's Cove, Norris Arm and Carmanville.

Using a peer support team approach, the Club provides comprehensive prenatal and postnatal support to priority pregnant women, including nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, breastfeeding promotion and support, and healthy lifestyle education.

With support from CPNP, the Organization for Community Action Initiatives Inc. has established a Healthy Baby Club to provide prenatal and postnatal support to priority pregnant women. The Club is based in the CAPC-funded Family Outreach Resource Centre in Dunfield Park and offers services at the Centre and through outreach sites at St. Mary's Church in Curling, All Hallow's Church in Humbermouth and at Hilltop and Farmdale Road community centres in Corner Brook. Using a peer support team approach, the Club provides nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, breastfeeding support and healthy lifestyle education.

With support from CPNP, Burin Peninsula Brighter Futures Inc. has established a Healthy Baby Club along the southeast coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Using a peer support team approach, the Club provides comprehensive prenatal and postnatal support to priority pregnant women. Services include nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, breastfeeding promotion and support, and healthy lifestyle education in nine communities on the Burin Peninsula: Marystown, Burin, Grand Bank, Lamaline, Lawn, St. Lawrence, Bay L'Argent, St. Bernard, Terrenceville and Grand Le Pierre.

With support from CPNP, the North Shore Early Childhood Association Inc. has established a Healthy Baby Club on the north shore of the Bay of Islands in western Newfoundland. The club supports priority pregnant women in five communities along a 40 km coastline: Cox's Cove, Meadows, Irishtown, McIvers and Summerside. Using a peer support team approach to prenatal and postnatal care, the Club provides nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, breastfeeding support and healthy lifestyle education.

With support from CPNP, the Fortune Bay North Family Resource Committee has established a Healthy Baby Club to provide prenatal and postnatal support for priority pregnant woman and new mothers on the eastern part of the Connaigre Peninsula and in Rencontre East at the head of Fortune Bay. Services offered through family resource centres and outreach sites use a peer support team approach to improve prenatal nutrition and promote the development of healthy babies. Activities include exercises, breathing and relaxation techniques, food selection and preparation, food supplementation, and supportive group meetings.

St. John's Healthy Baby Clubs

With support from the CPNP, the Brighter Futures Coalition of St. John's and District Inc. operates Healthy Baby Clubs in community centres, the YM/YWCA, and in Newfoundland and Labrador Housing sites in St. John's, Mount Pearl, Paradise and Bell Island. The programs use a peer-support team approach to provide comprehensive prenatal and postnatal support to priority pregnant women. These supports include nutritional assessment, food supplements, educational activities, healthy lifestyle education and the promotion and support of breastfeeding.
