Emergency Preparedness and Response

The Atlantic Regional Office of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC Atlantic) coordinates action on public health security and emergency issues that affect Atlantic Canada. This coordinating function is an extension of the national PHAC Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response.

The Atlantic Coordinator for Emergency Preparedness and Response has the following responsibilities:

  • developing and maintaining regional emergency response plans for PHAC and Health Canada;
  • monitoring disease outbreaks and other events that have public health impacts in Atlantic Canada;
  • assessing public health risks during emergencies;
  • collaborating with other public health, health emergency, emergency management and security agencies (provincial and federal) to prepare for and respond to threats to the public health and overall security of Canadians;
  • participating in various medical, scientific and security networks of interest to PHAC and Health Canada;
  • creating and sustaining an Atlantic network for emergency preparedness.

The priority for PHAC Atlantic is to improve cooperation and collaboration on emergency preparedness among federal and provincial health partners in Atlantic Canada. This priority was identified through an Atlantic region pandemic planning workshop held in Moncton in June 2006.
