Developing public policy means setting a direction and resources for action for the common good. Because many factors influence health, policies from many different sectors can influence a community's well-being. Healthy public policy requires that communities, their elected representatives, and public servants work together. Community participation in policy is most successful when people can relate it directly to their lives. Therefore, looking for ways to support communities by influencing healthy public policy is a common approach across all of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) Atlantic's program areas.
Since adopting the population health approach, we have brought together many non-government organizations to better understand and participate in public policy development. We have produced an educational resource aimed at both communities and government departments to build our capacity to work together on policies that address social and health issues.
