Description

The Next Wave - A Discussion is the final report of an Atlantic forum for youth and adults working with youth, about the impacts of demographic, economic and social changes on the future of Atlantic Canada's youth. This forum was held as a follow-up to the release of The Next Wave, a Health Canada publication. The forum provided an opportunity for 25 young people from the four provinces to respond to this earlier report and to make plans for a better future.

This final report summarizes the hopes and fears that forum participants expressed about their own futures, their responses to stories about social, economic and demographic changes in Atlantic Canada, and their five recommendations for action:

  1. Develop, implement and support more programs for youth.
  2. Develop and promote a positive relationship with the media.
  3. Foster and support youth involvement in government and in policy development.
  4. Increase access to information and raise awareness among youth.
  5. Increase communication and networking among youth, adults and government.

The appendix outlines projects that participants proposed for taking action on these recommendations.

The report concludes that youth can make a difference if included in decision making about policies and programs, and highlights the importance of developing a regional network and holding another youth conference as next steps for supporting this process.
