Description

Between 2000 and 2006, Atlantic Canada has made considerable progress in diabetes prevention programming. Preventing Diabetes: A Scan of Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Initiatives in Atlantic Canada is the report of an environmental scan conducted in June 2006. The scan examines provincial and regional initiatives that promote healthy eating and physical activity in the four Atlantic provinces. Information was collected through key informant interviews and a self-administered survey distributed widely to potential stakeholders. Results of the scan are compared to a similar study in June 2000.

The scan was conducted for a diverse audience. The bulk of the report consists of a description and inventory of the initiatives that promote healthy eating and active living. The comprehensive report also describes the population health approach; risk factors related to diabetes; trends since the 2000 report; and gaps, challenges, lessons, and opportunities for further action. Included are 16 recommendations for working together regionally to prevent diabetes.
