Description
This comprehensive report provides detailed information about the methods, results, and conclusions of a two-part project to address food security in Atlantic Canada. The goal of the project was to build capacity to address food security. For the purpose of the project, food security was defined as “a condition in which all people, at all times, have access to nutritious, safe, personally acceptable, and culturally appropriate foods, and that the food supply is procured, produced, and distributed in ways that are environmentally sound and socially just.”
Section one of the report provides an inventory of food security initiatives in Atlantic Canada. The aim of the inventory is to strengthen food security efforts by encouraging collaboration and resource sharing. The inventory includes names, contact information, and brief descriptions of key food security initiatives in the four Atlantic provinces, with links to key documents and organizations.
Section two summarizes presentations and discussions at a two-day Atlantic Food Security Forum held in March 2006. The objectives of the event were to share information about activity to address food security, to increase understanding of the issue, to learn about provincial priorities, and to explore possibilities for collaboration.
The report concludes that the best approach to improving the situation of food insecurity in Atlantic Canada is to address its root causes, and that a large number of partners and groups must be involved to successfully and promptly address this issue.
