Description
This 64-page document is the report of an environmental scan on sexual and reproductive health commissioned by the Atlantic Regional Office of the Population and Public Health Branch, Health Canada, to support the implementation of Health Canada's Framework for Sexual and Reproductive Health. The report is intended more as a source of information for reflection and discussion than a comprehensive reference on sexual and reproductive health. It is organized in three sections: Section 1 discusses the population health approach to sexual and reproductive health. Section 2 presents statistical information on six key sexual and reproductive health outcomes and identifies the most critical sexual and reproductive health issues in the region. Section 3 presents and analyzes program information from around the region. Current activity is discussed in terms of the principles and strategic directions in the National Framework report. This section also identifies program strengths and challenges for implementing a national framework.
The report concludes by stating that the biggest challenge for implementing the National Framework is to move towards action on the underlying conditions that determine the sexual and reproductive health issues of the broad population, such as income, education, employment, social status, and values and attitudes.
