Population Health Fund Projects 2008-2010

Healthy Alberta Communities: "Settings" (Governors of the University of Alberta c/o Healthy Alberta Communities (HAC)

The goal of this project is to create socially-inclusive settings in two communities in Alberta as a strategy for addressing health and social inequities to promote health and prevent chronic disease. Project activities include promoting the use of active transportation in Medicine Hat and surrounding areas and compiling the lessons learned in the urban and rural target communities to produce and disseminate a step-by-step guide to building a healthy community.

Sowing the seeds from the Provincial Food Security Network - Community capacity building for food security (Dietitians of Canada)

The goal of this project is to build the capacity of rural communities to promote food security. Project activities include facilitating advanced skill-building workshops on policy development to promote food security and supporting the development and implementation of food security action plans in select rural communities. The project will be supported by members of the Growing Food Security in Alberta (GFSA) network, who will also conduct an in-depth outcome evaluation, and continue to explore the feasibility of digital storytelling as an evaluation tool.

Building capacity for comprehensive school health (Alberta Coalition for Healthy School Communities)

The goal of this project is to increase the capacity of the Alberta Coalition for Healthy School Communities (ACHSC) network members to understand and address health disparities within a comprehensive school health (CSH) model. In 2009-2010, ACHSC is planning to further develop their work with new stakeholders to focus on Aboriginal school health and francophone school health. They will also continue their work to develop regional school health teams.

Injury Prevention in Métis Settlements and Rural & Urban Aboriginal Communities (Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research)

The goal of this project is to develop, disseminate, and implement a 5-year strategic action plan focused on injury prevention education, communication strategies, partnership development, and research and data development & utilization in consultation with stakeholders who represent and serve the needs of rural and urban Aboriginal people and Métis settlements.

The goal of this project is to increase the knowledge and skills of francophone-serving social service organizations to understand the social determinants of health. Project activities include holding community consultations in Fort McMurray with individuals experiencing health and economic disparities and community service organization representatives who serve this population to inform future interventions in these communities.
