The goal of the project is to increase access to culturally appropriate healthy eating and active living opportunities among Métis children and youth in Edmonton. Project activities include completing a scan of current physical activity and healthy eating activities at two participating schools; conducting focus groups with the participating children and youth to identify their barriers to healthy eating and active living; working with the two school communities to plan and implement culturally appropriate healthy eating and physical activity sessions using the results of the scan and the focus groups; and developing a mentorship program where the older students work on healthy living activities with the younger students.
The goals of the project are to increase the fitness and sport skill levels of Edmonton youth with disabilities, and to increase the knowledge and healthy eating practices of Edmonton youth with disabilities. Project activities include: conducting a needs assessment to identify nutritional and physical activity knowledge, experience and needs among the youth with disabilities and their families; establishing a network of experts to lead weekly nutrition and physical activity education sessions with the youth; working with the youth to prepare healthy snacks and individualized physical activity plans; and developing a youth authored healthy snack cookbook.
The goals of the project is to increase healthy eating and active living practices among students at seven high-needs schools in Calgary and Airdrie, and to increase teacher and parent engagement in promoting healthy eating and active living for their students and children. Project activities include: delivering hands-on, interactive classroom presentations on healthy eating and physical activity for students; and providing nutrition education to teachers and parents through newsletters, workshops, special events, and health fairs.
The goal of the project is to promote and support health literacy, specifically healthy eating and active living messaging, for refugee and immigrant students and their families in three communities in inner city Edmonton. Project activities include: engaging students and parents to identify their needs around healthy eating and active living; and based on the identified needs, developing and providing access to culturally appropriate resources and activities on healthy eating and active living. Examples of activities include: holding after-school food preparation programs; connecting students and their families to free sport and recreation programs; and providing after-school, weekend, or summer recreation programs.
The goals of the project are to increase students' and families' knowledge of community resources, services, and supports available that promote healthy eating and active living in eight inner-city schools in Edmonton, and to increase students' participation in daily physical activity and healthy eating practices. Project activities include: providing physical activity programs for children and parents; teaching a healthy food preparation course for children in Grades 2 and 3, and Grades 7 to 9; and hosting healthy eating and active living sessions and displays for students, lead by teachers and health professionals.
The aim of this project is to work with five francophone schools in remote regions in Alberta to develop physical activity programming that would encourage young francophone students to participate in physical activity programming in french at school, and increase their understanding of physical activity and healthy living in their daily lives. Project activities include doing a needs assessment involving school-aged youth and educators in the target school communities; improving and developing physical activity programs (before and after school) in these schools; and evaluating the impact of the programs on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of youth and educators in the target schools.
