Healthy Living Fund

The Healthy Living Fund, part of the federal Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Initiative, is intended to build public health capacity and develop supportive environments for physical activity and healthy eating.

The Healthy Living Funding priorities are:

  1. To support upstream action at the provincial, territorial and/or community level which addresses conditions leading to unhealthy eating, physical inactivity and unhealthy weights, uses a population health approach, and links across multiple settings.
  2. To support upstream actions to create the greatest impacts and to reduce health disparities by focusing on vulnerable populations, in particular children and youth, individuals with disabilities, those in isolated, remote and rural areas, and Aboriginal communities.

Healthy Living Fund - Regional Stream

The Healthy Living Fund has a national and regional stream. The regional stream of the Fund is delivered through an Agreement between the Public Health Agency of Canada and each province/territory.

In Alberta, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in February 2008 between the Public Health Agency of Canada (Alberta/NWT Region) and the Alberta government departments of Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. The Memorandum of Understanding outlines the Healthy Living Fund Framework, including the goals, delivery strategy, funding, evaluation, and reporting requirements.

The Healthy Living Fund draws on the existing infrastructure of Alberta Health and Wellness' Alberta Healthy School Community Wellness Fund, Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation’s Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, and PHAC’s Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Initiative. Each government department invests equal funding over the life of the Agreement.
