Canadian Diabetes Strategy - Community-Based Program

The federal government launched the Canadian Diabetes Strategy (CDS) in 1999 to help curb the growth of type 2 diabetes.

The first six years of the CDS raised awareness of diabetes and its risk factors, and created the first integrated national surveillance system for chronic disease based on provincial/territorial administrative data.

In 2005, the CDS was renewed. The primary focus of the renewed CDS will be: preventing diabetes through focused action on risk factors; and creating platforms for the early detection and management of diabetes. A significant new direction within the renewed CDS will be targeting populations who are at higher risk for developing diabetes, especially those who are either overweight, obese or have pre-diabetes. Other target populations will include individuals who are over age 40; have high blood pressure and high cholesterol or other fats in the blood; have a family history of diabetes, or are of certain high risk ethnic populations.

Canadian Diabetes Strategy Community-Based Program

The CDS Community-Based Program provides time-limited project funding to non-profit community-based groups. Regional priorities are determined through provincial/territorial consultations with key stakeholders.

The CDS Community-Based Program is based on a population health approach.
