HIV in Canada: Positive HIV test reports to June 30, 2009 and Reported to PHAC up to August 14, 2009

Table 5A. Number and percentage distribution of positive HIV test reports among adults (≥ 15 years) by exposure category and year of test

1 Percentages based on total number minus reports for which exposure category was not reported and for which there was no identified risk (NIR).
2 It was not always possible to separate "recipient of blood/clotting factor" or "origin from an HIV-endemic country/sexual contact with a person at risk". However, they have been separated where possible for reporting purposes.
3 Information on exposure categories of individuals who have tested positive for HIV is not available for Quebec and a portion of the data from Ontario. These data are presented as "Not reported".
4 Between 1985 and 1996, 47 positive HIV test reports for children were reported for Alberta. Due to limitations with the data, these records are reported as adults, yet as gender is not available it cannot be determined how they are divided between Tables 5B and 5C, or how many are gender unknown. All are a result of perinatal transmission, which is included in "Other" for this table.
5 Numbers include 1,329 positive HIV test reports for which gender was not reported or was reported as transgender.

Table 6B. Number of positive HIV test reports by province/territory and year of test (all ages)1

1 Positive HIV test reports from each province/territory vary for cases under 2 years of age (see Appendix 2).
2 Data prior to 2000 are not available for Nunavut as it became a Canadian territory in April 1999 and began reporting in 2000.
3 For Quebec, the number of positive HIV test reports is based on the minimum number of HIV positive individuals. (See Data Limitations for Quebec, Appendix 2).
4 Numbers include 2,753 positive HIV test reports for which gender was not reported or was reported as transgender.
5 Table totals include positive HIV test reports for which age group was not reported.
