Consultation on the Federal Framework on Lyme Disease 2015

Notice to the reader: The 2015 online consultation is now closed. A summary report from the consultation is now available online.

The purpose of this consultation was to solicit feedback on three key themes of the Federal Framework, as outlined in the Act respecting a Federal Framework on Lyme Disease:

  • National medical surveillance: to track incidence rates and the associated economic costs of Lyme disease in Canada.
  • Guidelines: to establish guidelines regarding the prevention, identification, treatment and management of Lyme disease, and to share best practices throughout Canada.
  • Education and awareness: to develop standardized educational materials for use by Canadian public health providers to increase national awareness about the disease.

What is the Federal Role in Lyme Disease?

The Government of Canada provides national leadership to reduce the risk to Canadians posed by Lyme disease. It fulfills this role by coordinating national surveillance to annually report on the number of cases of the disease where Lyme disease is present in Canada. The federal government distributes information to both the general public and health professionals to raise awareness of the disease, invests in research, and develops guidelines to improve diagnostic testing and prevention of Lyme disease. Much of this work is done in partnership with public health authorities at other levels of government, as well as health professionals and researchers, amongst others.

Reporting to Canadians

A summary report from the 2015 online consultation is now available online.

A public conference was held in May 2016 to help inform the development of the Federal Framework. As a result of the conference, the framework was drafted.

A public consultation on the draft framework was available online for your comments from February 7 to March 8, 2017 (30 calendar days).

We anticipate that within one year after the conference (May 2017), the final report outlining the Federal Framework will be posted online. After the report is posted online, it will be tabled in both Houses of Parliament.

Thank you for contributing your views to inform the development of the Federal Framework on Lyme Disease.
